Inclusion through technology

Video games can be so much more than just entertainment.

Technology has opened up a world of fun, but sadly, many individuals with disabilities are unable to fully participate. That’s why I support SpecialEffect’s mission to level the playing field for everyone.

The charity aims to bring fun and inclusion back into the lives of people with physical disabilities through the innovative use of technology. At the core of their mission is their work to optimise inclusion, enjoyment and quality of life, by helping individuals control video games to the best of their abilities.

This mission extends far beyond gaming. The StarGaze service brings communication, independence, and hope to people in intensive care units with severe injuries or illnesses. Additionally, telepresence robots help medically isolated children with their education and friendships. SpecialEffect is committed to improving life for those in need, providing support as long as possible and free of charge.

I’ve been a volunteer for the charity since meeting the team at an expo in 2013. I assist at their stand at events across the UK and host presentations on their work. My husband and I also participate in the annual GameBlast marathon every February. There’s a whole range of events that everyone is welcome to get involved in, and you can find out what we’re currently working on below.

Coming up next: GameBlast25

Following the success of our Pixels to Pavements event for GameBlast24 in February 2024, we’re looking forward to taking part in GameBlast25 next year. We’ll start planning for the marathon in September and in the meantime, you can check out my posts about previous events below.
